Home shows off musical talent

THE sound of music filled the air when residents from Stretton Hall nursing home in Church Stretton took part in a fun-filled music morning.
Led by social life coordinator Julie Hamilton, who played the keyboard, residents showed off their musical talents using a range of percussion instruments, including maracas, tambourines with cymbals and cabasas.

TV presenter opens new home

TELEVISION personality Fiona Phillips officially opened a new care home in Colchester for Carebase.
She joined the town's mayor Helen Chuah and the staff and residents of Alderwood to officially open the new facility.
The home boasts state-of-the-art facilities including an in-house cinema, sensory room, hair salon, brasserie and private dining facilities.

Work begins on new North East facility

WORK has started on a '2.5m care home in Dipton, County Durham, which will offer 70 beds for dementia sufferers as well as ordinary nursing care.
The three-storey development is due for completion in summer 2012 and is being project managed by property and construction consultancy Building Surveyors Limited, working alongside Projekt Architects and property refurbishment company MGM Limited.
The care home will include a cinema room, hairdressers, and first-rate catering facilities and will create 80 full and part time jobs.

Property agent sells two homes
DC Care has completed the sale of two 40 bed care homes in West Yorkshire.
Acting upon the instructions of D F Wilson and J N R Pitts of Begbies Traynor in Leeds, who were the joint administrators of Holberry Care Limited, the homes were purchased by a newly-formed business P&C Care based in Shipley .
The sale included the established businesses of The Ivy Nursing Home in Shipley and The Mount Nursing Home in Bradford. They were purchased for an undisclosed amount.

Home to take 17 months to complete

WORK is set to being shortly on a new care home in Surrey for disabled ex-Service men and women.
The Royal Star and Garter Homes' three-storey building with underground parking will see residents move from the existing home in Richmond once it is complete.
Construction of the new 60-bed facility will be undertaken by Morgan Sindall and is expected to take 17 months to complete. Almost half of the rooms will offer specialist dementia care.

Eat Safe Award for Glasgow care home

A CARE home on the outskirts of Glasgow has been awarded the Eat Safe Award.
Govan based Florence House part of the Lambhill Court Ltd group, offers 55 large en suite bedrooms and three self contained flats within a converted school building and currently runs at high occupancy.
The Eat Safe Award is administered by Local Authority Environmental Health Services in conjunction with the Food Standards Agency. It consists of a single tier of award granted by local authorities to establishments meeting standards of food hygiene which are over and above those required by current food hygiene legislation.
Florence House was assessed for the award as part of scheduled food hygiene inspections, carried out by Local Authority Environmental Health Services, who also issue and control the Eat Safe Award certificates.

Care home's residents enjoy a taste of the tropics

IT may have been cold outside but elderly residents at a Northumberland care home were feeling very warm at a Hawaiian-inspired party.
Residents living in the Wellburn House home in Ovingham enjoyed an afternoon of tropical treats, including non-alcohol cocktails and music.
The idea for the themed party came from deputy manager Carol Ridgeway, who bought a frilly Hawaiian-style umbrella in the summer but because of the bad weather never used it.
She said:I thought it would be good to bring the warmth of Hawaii into the home so we had the umbrella, real palm trees, inflatable palm trees and monkeys, cocktails and even garlands made out of napkins.

Dog visits bring joy to residents

REGULAR visits from a dog called Ollie are bringing joy and companionship to the residents at a Cheshire care home.
Ollie, a registered Pets As Therapy dog and the pet of Bob McPartland, who used to be a care assistant at the home, has proved popular at Parklands in Poynton.
Residents at the CLS owned home are even hoping to adopt a donkey after the Elizabeth Svensden Trust arranged for two, Molly and Rusty, to visit last year.
Manager Chris Machin said: Our residents love animals so having Ollie visit the home so often is fantastic. He is a very friendly dog and he loves being looked after and showered with affection by the residents.
Many of our residents used to own pets so seeing Ollie brings back happy memories. He boosts morale and provides joy and laughter throughout the home.

Refurbished home set to welcome new residents

CAMBRIDGESHIRE care home is set to welcome new residents following the completion of an expansion and refurbishment project.
Six new bedrooms have been added to the purpose-built The Hillings in Eaton Socon, increasing the total to 70. Thirty of these are specifically for residents with dementia.
New communal lounge areas have been introduced and bathrooms have been modernised with state-of-the-art equipment.
